Overview

Rudyard Kipling nació en Bombay en 1865. Era hijo del último conservador del Museo de Lahore. En 1871 fue enviado a Inglaterra para que continuara su educación, viviendo aislado y triste junto a la familia que le acogía. Vivió en Londres durante 11 años y regresó a la India en 1882. Allí trabajó como periodista, desarrollando en estos años su formación como escritor. Sus experiencias en la India le servirían como base de muchos de sus relatos sobre los ambientes y la vida en la India colonial. Los abundantes cuentos y artículos periodisticos que escribió llegaron a Inglaterra antes que él y a su regreso se encontró convertido en una celebridad. En la última parte de su vida, fue colmado de honores. En 1907 le concedieron el Premio Nobel de Literatura. Murió en Londres en 1936. Los cuentos que hemos seleccionado para este libro corresponden a sus dos grandes experiencias vitales. Wee Willie Winlie refleja la exhaltación de la vida militar en la India y los valores de virilidad a los que era tan afecto. Una opinión retrata, de forma cruel y despiadada, tanto a la sociedad inglesa de la época como la mentalidad que Kipling veía en los súbditos de las colonias. Arroyo Amigo es un retrato de la vida rural inglesa, donde un hecho criminal es presentado como una consecuencia lógica de la vida que les tocaba vivir, como también sucede en su cuento Miss Postgate.
